How about a house with no electric bill?
ABC Action News | June 25, 2010
PALM HARBOR, Fla. - The goal is to completely eliminate your electric bill.
"We want to spark a revolution in American building, so that every home in America is built as a zero energy," said Alfonso Castaneira, founder of Zero Energy America.
Builders, contractors, and other companies are coming together in Palm Harbor to construct what they are calling the area's first zero energy home.
Officials say every bit of this house is green. From the cement to the concrete.
The concrete acts like an Igloo cooler, making dry wall and insulation unnecessary. The ventilated tile roof is also key to energy efficiency.
"We are eliminating so much of the heat before it even penetrates," said Castaneira.
Building the house right is one thing, but solar panels are a must to power appliances.
"Here on a June day, it's very, very hot. That heat, we can capture it and turn it into hot water and satisfy the entire needs of the home," said Castaneira.
All these features will cost more, from the energy efficient lights to low flow toilets.
The house will be in in the million dollar range, but those involved with the project say zero energy homes are finally affordable and models for all different price ranges will be available.
